Can natural ventilation replace mechanical ventilation?

A practical screening pathway for deciding whether permanent openings can form a real natural-ventilation strategy.

The answer depends less on whether the building has windows and more on whether the required air path is permanent, unobstructed, suitable for the current use and accepted under the building compliance pathway.

The practical answer

Sometimes. Natural ventilation can be a valid strategy, but it should be demonstrated under AS 1668.4 and the applicable NCC pathway. Openable windows or doors do not automatically replace mechanical ventilation.

The assessment should define the enclosure, its use, the permanent openings, effective free area, cross-ventilation path and external obstructions.

Operational openings such as roller doors may help in practice but should not be relied upon casually if the ventilation basis depends on them always being available.

Where natural ventilation is not reliable for all zones or operating conditions, a mixed-mode or mechanical solution may be more defensible.
